Once you have completed the changes to your site and renamed the index page to bring the new site public, you can then begin the process of promoting the site in the top search directories and search engines. I'll list my recommendations for the
appropriate search services below. They are in approximate order of importance, i.e. order of most traffic and thus potential new visitors. Any highlighted links should take you directly to the "Add URL" page for that service.
Search Directories - Where a human editor reviews your site. Unfortunately, almost all have gone to a "Pay-For-Inclusion" business model, with Yahoo being the most expensive.
- Yahoo - You are already listed, although I will be submitting an update request for you so that hopefully the editors will include some keywords in the description. Yahoo now charges $299
annually to remain listed on their search database.
- LookSmart - I will submit your site as agreed. You may want to consider upgrading and promoting your site sometime in the future...there is a small monthly fee to do so.
- Open Directory - You are already listed. You may want to ask the editors to update your listing once the new site is up.
- Ask Jeeves - Submit your site through their database partner, SiteSubmit. You'll need to pay an annual fee
Search Engines - Where an automated spider crawls your site and indexes it according to the title, meta tags, and body text content. Note that while some engines still allow you to submit your site for free (which may take weeks for
results to appear), most have gone to a "Pay-For-Inclusion" model where you pay a modest annual fee for your site to be immediately listed and then to have your listing regularly updated.
- AOL - Gets most of it's results from Open Directory Project listed above. If you also are in the top 3 listings for a particular keyword on Overture, you will be in the top 3 "Sponsored Links" on AOL.
- MSN - Pulls it's results from LookSmart listed above.
- Go.com - Pulls it's results from Overture below.
- Google - You can add your site for free by clicking the link to the left. You may also want to consider enhancing your listing through their
various levels of advertising service.
- Netscape - Pulls it's main results from Open Directory Project above. If you are in the top 3 on Overture, you will be listed in the "Partner Search Results" at the top of the page.
- Lycos - You can sign up for free here,
which takes 4-6 weeks, or you can use their InSite Service, which has a small fee to show up quickly, within 48 hours. Lycos also pulls its top results from
Overture...if you are in the top 3 on Overture, you are in the top 3 on Lycos.
- Excite - Simple...sign up on Overture below.
- Iwon - Ditto...Overture's top 3 listings show up as "Featured Listings" on Iwon.
- Alta Vista/Infospider - You can submit to the basic level for free (I've already done that for you) with results in 4-6 weeks, or you can use the Express Submit and pay a small fee to have
faster results. You can also enhance your listing later.
- FAST/All The Web - One of the last FREE and very fast databases on the web. I've already submitted you to this one, but check back and resubmit if necessary.
- Inktomi - You have to pay a small annual fee for inclusion and submit through one of their resellers.
- Direct Hit - Believe it or not, here is another free one. Just click the link to go to their Add URL page.
Pay-Per-Click - Where you bid a certain amount per click to be listed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. This can be the fastest way (and maybe even the least expensive) to generate traffic.
- Overture - One of the most important options for promoting your site. You can pick several keyphrases to bid on, and if you bid yourself into the top 3 listings on that keyphrase, then you will also
appear in the top listings on several of Overture's partner search services (AOL, Yahoo, Lycos, etc.) You can go to their "Self-Serve" page to create
and bid on listings.
- 7Search - Similar to Overture, with pay-per-click on specific keywords and phrases that you choose and bid on. They have less traffic, but that also means that their price per click is typically lower
than the same search term on Overture. You can go to PayPerRanking to submit your bids for 7Search.
- Sprinks/About.com - About.com is a strange combination of human-edited categories, combined with search listings generated by Inktomi above and pay-per-click listings from Sprinks. First, make sure
your site is listed with Inktomi above, then you can bid on specific search terms later with Sprinks.
- Ah-Ha - Another low-traffic, and hence low-cost, pay-per-click search engine. You can submit to their TopLinks account to be in the top three
listings for the search terms you choose.
- Bay9 - An auction and search site. You can sign up for their search services here.
- FindWhat - Also a bit lower traffic and lower costs than Overture, but potentially worth budgeting for. You can sign up here.
- Kanoodle - Similar to Overture in that they have partnerships with CNet and others so that your listing on Kanoodle would also show up elsewhere. Prices per search term are very competitive with
Overture. You can sign up here.
Other - Other search related options.
- RealNames.com - Can pay for your company "Real Name" and/or specific "Keywords by RealNames", if available.
- Netword.com - Same basic model, works on different browsers. Hasn't really proven itself yet, but shows promise.
- YellowPages.com - Online phonebook for businesses.
- Seattle City Search - Portal site to list your business in.
- MSN YellowPages - Another phone book specific to MSN and the default of Internet Explorer. Good choice for lots of coverage since so many people use IE.
- Netscape YellowPages - Same thing, but specific to Netscape and AOL users, the second most used browser.
